A DREAM WORLD
Before the arrival of a significant number of whites into New Zealand the Maoris lived in a world that no one could possibly understand fully on any level. It has been described as a dream world, a subconscious world, or an irrational world were there was no great variety of challenges or stimulation.
They were isolated both physically and mentally.
In 1769, apart from myths and stories relating to Hawaiki their range of thoughts would have been limited to what they could see around them.
I find it interesting that today's Parts (part-maori) refer back to these people with such reverence and bestow on them wisdom that for all intents and purposes is not deserved.

True. And these days, no matter how intellectually challenged a maori may be, to give out an aura of wisdom and wiseness, one just slings a cloak round ones shoulders and hey presto...a wise proud chief-like look ready to pass some profound deep meaning statement such as... "we want it"
