MAORI LANGUAGE
I agree that the Maori language (ALL languages) should be preserved - but it is the responsibility of THAT RACE to do it within their OWN culture.
There is no way that it should be forced on other ethnicities under any guise at all. If they are too lazy to do it themselves (as it appears) then they should not rely on the 85% to carry them - as they expect in other spheres.
They (Maori) have several radio and TV stations that the other 85% fund for them to help this way - why force it on the rest in prime time (e.g. Maori News on TV1 and innumerable bits and pieces throughout the day) - if they want to listen/watch it - go to their own channels. That is what they are for.
It most certainly should NOT be forced onto unwilling school kids when the teachers are already complaining that they do not have enough time to teach the subjects that will be essential for the children to grow up as responsible supporters of their family and community. In a school in Rotorua Maori language and Maori "history" are taught, but they do not have classes in English.

maori language is propped up on life support courtesy of the long suffering tax payers. Like anything that has been on life support for a long time, there comes a time when a discussion on turning off the life support arises. That point happened years ago....but nobody had the spine to pull the plug. We are pumping millions of dollars into flogging a dead horse. If it survives by itself without taxpayer money, then fine, but if not, then that is fine too. Someone once said that maoris were like cuckoos....the cuckoo is too lazy to look after its own egg so lays it in another birds nest, much like maori who are too lazy to keep their language going so throw it at the europeans and expect us to keep it going. We all know that it is a useless language and most of us have zero interest in it. Recently in Auckland the local maori mafia have declared a something-or-other to stop people walking through the bush and possibly spreading a disease that affects kauri trees. i have no idea what this word means and don't care, and I suspect there is an english word that this maori word has been made up to mean. Sick to death of being told I should learn maori. So much so that I go out of my way not to pick up any words at all.
