POLITICAL CORRECTNESS IS EVIL What the example (link below) shows is that Political correctness is making us overly sensitive to ANY comments that make reference to a point of difference between the majority and someone who is an "outsider". But these comments have gone on as long as there have been minorities, e.g. Poms, Micks, Dallies, Queers, Curry Munchers or even the hideous Australian accent. There was seldom anything cruel or racially demeaning intended, but this was the price of fitting into a different and new society. In the pre PC days these points allowed humour based on perceived characteristics such as "There was an Irishman, Pom and and Aussie adrift...." - you know the type of thing that now is only said in privacy in case someone takes offence. Seldom was malice a factor - problems such as cultural and language adjustments were glaringly obvious and became minimised over time as the person made these adjustments. The undue sensitivities expressed in the above article showed this person not immediately recognising that for the average Kiwi, there is no understanding of the relatively subtle physical differences of the various "Asian" races but he did figure out the problem was his to resolve by merging with society and not expecting that society would change for him. He has done this with success. Much could be learned from this person. Political correctness is evil, and is seldom utilised for the public good. On the other hand, good, old-fashioned abrasive humour rubs the rough edges off society and leaves us all a bit more polished and more valuable.
