EMBRACE THAT WE ARE ALL NEW ZEALANDERS
In last Friday's Manawatu Standard the Mayor was voicing his displeasure that a poll is now needed to vote on the need of Maori Wards in Palmerston North.
Here is my reply:-
In the Evening Standard Friday 23rd February 2018 there were three reports under the headlines “Mayor’s Poll Disappointment” –“Expanding Prison Population a Concern” and “Racism Complaints at a five-year High”
Politicians, City Councillors and Sports Administrators have to take responsibility for these trends in our communities and our Nation.
In 1960 through to the peak of the campaign, “No Maoris No Tour”, in 1983, was our county’s protest against separate development in South Africa. Here we are today under a new name “Maori Wards” proposing the system that we so violent opposed in South Africa.
I am surprised and sadden by the comments reportedly made by Maori Leader Wiremu Te Awe Awe that “he was disappointed that someone comes from out of Palmerston North to fire things up’.
Palmerston North people are intelligent and well informed people and are able to make up their own minds, on what is the best thing for all people belonging to the city.
New Zealand ”today” is truly a multicultural community. Do we really desire Wards for each Cultural identity. Establishing Maori Wards sets a precedent for others to lobby for their identity and representation.
If Maori Wards are established it will inevitably fuel the simmering “racism” attitudes that exist.
Until we can embrace “TODAY” that we are all New Zealanders bringing a diversity of rich cultures to the festival table of our community, and move forward encouraging each other to achieve, we will continue to fuel, separatism, racism and criminal behaviour. You cannot have one without the other.
