MAHUTA OPEN TO MAORI WARD LAW CHANGE Local Government Minister Nanaia Mahuta says if there is a clear steer from mayors and councils that the law around Maori seats need to change, she will listen. Five councils face referendums over their choice to create Maori wards after a concerted campaign by Don Brash's Hobson's Pledge group, and other councils are looking for other solutions for Maori representation that don't involve elected seats because of concerns over the potential backlash.
