OBLIGATIONS
T M writes > My ancestors arrived in New Zealand legally long after other Europeans came here and did whatever they did way back when.
There was no requirement for my ancestors to acknowledge a specific race of people as part of their pathway to citizenship.
None of this quarrelling between the crown and Maori has anything whatsoever to do with me or my family.
I can choose to acknowledge Maori or not, that’s entirely up to me.
I’m a legal citizen of this country having been born here as are my children. I’m not responsible for wrongs that may have taken place before my ancestors even considered immigrating to New Zealand.
It’s not my job to remind Maori how to speak their Native tongue.
There is no obligation on my part to have to recognise a Maori custom or belief.
There is no obligation for me to respect anyone who has not earned my respect.
I am not obliged to bow down to any mythical god or acknowledge their existence.
I am free to live my life as I choose within the constraints of the law which each and every New Zealander is required to do.
There is no separation or distinction between black and white New Zealanders in my mind, we are all equal and deserve equal opportunity.
