Hawkes Bay Today 30/3/19
A GROSS INSULT
Dame Anne Salmond (HBT, Wednesday) offers a gross insult to Pakeha New Zealanders with her claim that “the doctrine of white superiority is still alive and well in New Zealand” inferring that to be a white New Zealander, of whatever shade and ethnicity, is to be a “white supremacist”.
Then to attempt a conflation of the Christchurch massacre with supposed contraventions of the Treaty of Waitangi inflicted on Maori by “the incoming white settler government” and many others since, makes a ridiculous and inflammatory association, serving no purpose other than promoting feelings of victimhood in those that look to external causes for their current status.
I would have expected better from a New Zealander of the Year. (Abridged)

THE ELMS
Regarding Peter Dey's response to my letter on The Elms (letters, March 16), I repeat it is not the ratepayer's Job to fund alleged grievances. That is the responsibility of the Government.
And to allude that Maori have not been treated with ongoing "goodwill" is simply wrong, in my view, in face of the settlements to date, with even further claims mounting in the pipeline.
Thank you, Peter. for re-igniting Interest in this issue, which garnered much discussion at the March meeting of the council. (Abridged)

SUMMARY EXECUTION
According to John Tamihere, 79 Maori were shot without due process after trying to defend their land and this was the nadir of the East Coast conflicts, 1856-1868.
I would have thought the lowest point would have been when those 79 earlier shot, bayoneted, tomahawked or clubbed 70 sleeping innocent people at Matawhero.
Tamihere failed to say the shooting of the 79 was at the orders of Rapata Wahawaha, who when young was a slave of the Rongowhakaata tribe. It looks as if he was enacting his revenge while fighting on the side of the government militia.
