NEW BEACHSIDE RETIREMENT VILLAGE PLANNED NEAR WHAKATĀNEWhen the council reviewed its district plan, the development of the subdivision at 77 Bunyan Road was opposed by several Maori groups and individuals. The Opihi block is located adjacent to the ancient urupa, Opihi Whanaungakore. The resource consent notes that there are no known archaeological sites within the block, and none were found during the fieldwork. Despite this, due to the proximity of the urupa, an archaeologist has recommended the developers apply to Heritage New Zealand for an authority to destroy or modify an unrecorded archaeological site...... www.stuff.co.nz/national/politics/local-democracy-reporting/117989854/new-beachside-retirement-village-planned-near-whakatne
